5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a metabolic of the amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan is broken down by vitamins, enzymes, and other co-factors into 5-HTP, and is then turned into serotonin. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that tells your brain that you are satisfied and do not need to eat more. Serotonin deficiency contributes to weight gain, depression, sleeplessness, anxiety, inflammation, and joint pain, among other symptoms. Low serotonin levels also lead to carbohydrate cravings (sugar cravings) and overeating. 5-HTP can help reduce appetite while it enhances your mood, and increases energy levels.


Recommended Dosage: Start with 50 mg at breakfast, 50 mg at dinner, and 50 mg at bedtime. It can be taked with melatonin at bedtime if you have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. 5-HTP usually provides relief within 1-2 weeks, and it can be taken long-term with no side effects.
